The Best Things To Do and See in New York City During the Christmas Season
New York City is located on the east coast, where the Hudson River meets the Atlantic Ocean. It is considered America’s most populated city, ranking as the 11th most populated city in the world! That being said, there are a multitude of things to do and see in this magical city during the holiday season. Listed below are a few of the places we visited, along with other places we hope to see one day.
Christmas Lights
- Visit Saks Fifth Avenue to enjoy their theatrical light show – it’s a sight to see! View this post to explore other areas in New York City with beautiful light displays.
- If you’re visiting New York during the Empire State Building’s light show, you went to New York at the perfect time! The light show only lasts for about one week, so be sure to research when they are having the light show, if this is of interest.
- View the Rockefeller Christmas Tree, located in the Rockefeller Center Plaza. The Tree Lighting Ceremony happens right after Thanksgiving, officially kicking off the Christmas festivities!

Christmas Activities
- Watch the Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes! We did this and absolutely loved it. Highly, highly recommend!
- Ice skating at Rockefeller Center. Tickets are reasonably priced. However, be sure to get there right when the rink opens, otherwise the line gets very long. You can also ice skate at The Winter VIllage at Bryant Park.
- Visit the Winter Wonderland at Watermark, a destination inspired by The Santa Clauses films.
- Check-out NYC’s Holiday Markets to get some Christmas gift shopping completed.
- Walk from Central Park on Fifth Avenue towards Herald Square to view all the department store’s holiday decorations.
- We walked Brooklyn Bridge, a famous bridge that spans from Manhattan and Brooklyn. If you’re doing this walk during the winter season, be sure to dress warm.
Top 6 Places To Eat & Drink in New York City
- Rolf’s German Restaurant is hands down a top three must when visiting NYC during the holiday season. I recommend getting there early, before the restaurant opens to enjoy a drink at the bar. We got to the restaurant an hour before it opened, and still had to wait in line for over an hour – get there early! However, the drinks are delicious and the decorations are one of a kind.
- Enjoy a beverage at the Refinery Rooftop from the Refinery Hotel while enjoying a stunning view of the Empire State Building.
- NoMo Kitchen is a beautiful restaurant located in the NoMo SoHo hotel. It is famous for being filmed in The Other Women. Highly recommend visiting!
- The Bowery is the coziest spot in the city, especially during the holiday season!
- Carbone is an Italian-American restaurant with elegant meals and beverages.
- Boucherie is a traditional French styled restaurant with four locations within New York City.
