Sharing my top food & beverage choices for navigating the airport, to maintain your healthy eating routine while traveling.
When traveling, practicing a balanced lifestyle will instill food freedom. This can help to remove stress surrounding what to purchase to satisfy your hunger. Below is a list of my go-tos of nutrient dense options.
When it comes to airport food, I prefer to keep my options light. However, that doesn’t mean Kraig and I won’t stop at a restaurant and have a mixed drink with our 6 am breakfast on occasion, haha. It’s all part of a balanced lifestyle! Here are my top choices for when you want something quick, light, and packed with nutrients.
This is a great option as it’s packed with fiber, which will help to keep you full and satisfied. Depending on your airport, there are different flavors of overnight oats to choose from such as apple cinnamon to vanilla bean.
This is a great choice if you need to add some fiber to your travel day. Be mindful, when it comes to salads, be certain there is an adequate amount of protein. If the salad doesn’t contain more than 20 grams of protein, is there a separate source you can purchase to add to the salad? Adding more protein will keep you feeling full and satisfied for longer.
This is a great snack or addition to a meal to increase protein!
You can purchase single servings of both fruits and veggies, which are two great options to add more fiber and hydration to your day. Depending on what fruit I purchase, I may also grab a side of nut butter to add a source of healthy fats and protein to satisfy my hunger. When it comes to veggies, I tend to reach for hummus.
Pistachios, peanuts, almonds – airports generally have a great selection of mixed nuts! You can add these as a topping to a variety of meals such as salads and yogurt. Just be mindful of portions as nuts are calorie dense.
Choose from a classic PB & J, or opt for a high protein chicken sandwich.
This snack is both light and refreshing. I love pairing this as a side with a sandwich for a picnic style lunch.
These can be great for a quick option when in a hurry. Just be mindful, some granola bars have more sugar than candy bars. Choose the option with less added sugars and more protein!
When it comes to beverages, again, balance is key. However, staying hydrated is important for a multitude of reasons. Especially if you’re traveling to a higher elevation – hydration is key to prevent headaches and lightheadedness.
What better way to stay hydrated than with water? You can always choose options such as sparkling water and coconut water. I tend to reach for coconut water, as it’s a natural way to replenish lost electrolytes after a long day of travels.
Unsweetened ice tea, hot peppermint tea – airports generally have several tea options to choose from, especially at coffee shops.
I love starting my day with coffee. So I usually grab a cup of cold brew if we have an early flight. Just be mindful, many of the added sugars we consume come from the beverages we choose. And coffee with added flavors can come with up to over 80 grams of added sugars! Opt for a smaller serving size or black coffee for less sugar. The less sugar we consume, the better we will feel.
