The 80/20 rule is what I follow to have a balanced approach to eating. This has been key to creating a healthy and sustainable lifestyle to help me achieve my health goals. Sharing all the details below!
The 80/20 rule is a flexible approach to eating. It’s a guide to everyday eating – focusing 80% of the time on nutrient dense, balanced meals. And 20% of the time, allowing the consumption of favorite treats in moderation. This removes pressure from the all-or-nothing mindset, while focusing on a more balanced mindset.
Maintaining a balanced lifestyle can increase quality of life, while reducing the risk of developing a variety of chronic diseases. These diseases may include obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and fatty liver, to name a few. When incorporating the 80/20 rule and balanced lifestyle approach, focusing on consuming nutrient dense foods such as fruits, veggies, lean proteins, complex carbs, and healthy fats is key. This will provide your body with the nutrients your body craves. However, allowing 20% of the time to consume your favorite treats and sweets can remove the pressure of always feeling the need to consume balanced, nutrient dense meals. This can make celebrating graduations, birthday parties, or holidays more enjoyable and less stressful.
I also implement the 80/20 rule and balanced lifestyle when traveling, to help me stick with routines while away from home. Not only do I feel better when I stick with my routines, this also allows me to enjoy my travels, trying new foods to experience different cultures.
