This Summertime Watermelon Goat Cheese & Basil Salad is a great, refreshing summer salad perfect for those warmer months.
Having a perfectly ripe watermelon is key for this recipe! There are several methods I use to determine if a watermelon is ripe and ready to be consumed. Review them below.
Method #1: Knock on the watermelon as if you’re about to knock on a door. There should be a deep hollow sound if it’s ready to be consumed. If the watermelon is unripe, it will have a high pitched sound. If you knock on the watermelon and it sounds of a deep thud, the watermelon is likely overripe.
Method #2: Check the field spot, AKA the area on the watermelon that touches the ground as it grows. A yellow field spot indicates a ripe watermelon, while a white field spot indicates a less ripe watermelon.
Method #3: Squeeze the flesh on the blossom end. A ripe watermelon will have a mushy feel, while an unripe watermelon will be solid.
This recipe is quick and easy to prepare – cutting the watermelon is the most difficult part! If you’re curious as to how to correctly cut a watermelon, watch this video.
